West Branch Angler's Tip of the Week

10/7, Flows are currently at 732 and steady at Hale Eddy after the bump in flow we got last night. This is a great flow for wade and boat anglers. This wet fall has been very good for our local rivers. Off-colored water gets fish really fired up. Keep the streamer, and big bug stick handy! There has still been ample opportunity to fool fish on the surface. For bugs, on the West Branch, Blue Winged Olives is the dominant hatch. Hebe's, ISO's, Cahill's, and various species of Caddis around as well. There has been opportunities at a midday hatches on the right days, typically rainy overcast days with the hatch kicking off around 2-3. The last 45 minutes of light, "45 minutes of fury" as we like to call it has been very consistent with a fish eating a good mix of BWO's, Hebe's, ISO's, Cahills, Caddis, and other various spent insects. A good tip for the anglers looking to fish dries into the darkness: put on something you can see, you can get away with almost any pattern with the right profile when the light is very low.
