Description: About Savage River

The lower river is a tailwater. It's wild brown and brook trout population combined with stellar hatches attract anglers from all over the east coast. It's absolutely as good a trout river as you'll find anywhere. Blue and red quills, midges, small stones, and bwo's provide most of the action before early June. Once we get into early summer you'll find sulphurs, caddis, and yellow sallies just about every day. The lower river has a much steeper gradient than the upper, making for quite difficult wading before mid summer water levels drop a bit. Even during low summer flows, many anglers find it to be extremely difficult. Bring your wading staff.

Best Access:

Access is found all along Savage river road. Just stay out from behind the houses. The locals protect their private property. If a land owner has both sides of the river, they also have the bottom, so unless you can levitate, stay clear.
