Smoke cigars, sip bourbon. Always a good idea. Flows are good and fishable. Share the water. Be nice. It's a busy place.

5-Day Outlook as of 9/11/25

EXPECTED FLOW INCREASE SEPTEMBER 25. Our current dry conditions, drought and West Grand Lake water levels are preventing increased flows in Grand Lake Stream prior to September 25 in the absence of significant rainfall between now and then. This is good news considering how dry it has been this summer. We will not see an early run of salmon but we will have a good fall season once flows increase. We are expecting flow of 300-500 cfs on the 25th if not a day or two sooner. Questions about flows in Grand Lake Stream contact Steve Strout at Woodland Pulp, LLC at (207) 427-3311.

Techniques & Tips as of 9/11/25

Fall salmon respond to many flies, but first fish in will crush streamers. The longer they are in the river, the more diverse the fly patterns can be - from pheasant tails to hot heads, to golden retrievers and prince nymphs. Swinging soft hackles over lying fish is also a great way to hook up. Stay tuned.

Description: About Grand Lake Stream

Roughly 3 miles of river, Grand Lake Stream is home to one of the original four strains of landlocked salmon in the lower 48. Its gin-clear waters flow from West Grand Lake in eastern Maine, southeast into Big Lake and on toward the St. Croix River on the boarder of New Brunswick. Grand Lake Stream has been a destination for fly anglers since the mid 1800’s and has been FFO water since 1903. The Stream consists of deep pools connected by broken water and riffles that hold salmon throughout the summer if conditions are advantageous. There is also about a mile of steep, fast water that, at the proper flows, can be very exciting, scenic and productive to fish. The open season begins April 1 and closes October 20. In between these dates you can experience classic streamer fishing, top-notch nymphing or world-class dry fly fishing depending on when you choose to fish. Listed in Trout Unlimited's 100 Best Trout Streams In America, Grand Lake Stream is a must-fish for your "bucket list."
