The Reel Baja's Tip of the Week

With the weather getting hot some of the best fishing will be early in the morning and late afternoon. Concrete on those times especially if fishing from the beach. The fish can certainly be active other times of day but those “magic hours” can be some of the best.

5-Day Outlook as of 7/9/26

We expect good weather and good fishing this upcoming week. We will see a little wind in the afternoons from the Southeast it that is typical for this time of year. The fishing should remain steady as the water temperatures are looking good.

Techniques & Tips as of 7/9/26

Inshore - This time of year we see a lot of action early in the mornings as well as the low light hours in the evenings. People tend to over look these time periods. If you want some great action get up and on the water early or fish a little later in the day as those "magic" hours can be great. Offshore - have a few different rods ready from 8wt. to 12/14wt as you never know what you might encounter as far as species and size of fish. It never fails you will be running to a destination and you run into feeding fish on your way. You need to be ready for anything before you leave the dock.

Current Conditions as of 7/9/26

Southern Baja Fishing Report – Mid July Fishing across Southern Baja continues to be good overall as we move through the middle of July. The beach roosterfish action has slowed slightly compared to a week and a half ago. There are still quality fish being caught, but not in the numbers we were seeing recently. That’s very normal for this fishery, and we’re confident the bite will rebound as conditions continue to develop through the summer. Offshore, the tuna fishing remains excellent. Most of the action is taking place 20–30 miles offshore, where anglers are finding very good-quality fish. The majority of these tuna are 70 pounds and larger, making them a bit oversized for most fly tackle. That said, if someone wants to take on the challenge with a fly rod, we’re always happy to give it a try. Dorado are scattered throughout the offshore waters, although there aren’t any large schools to report at the time of this update. The best opportunities continue to come during the morning hours. We’ve also been finding roosterfish from the boat. They have become a little more selective lately, often choosing between the live bait and the fly, which can make them challenging. Even so, we’re fooling a few each trip and enjoying some exciting opportunities. The marlin fishing has been consistently good. Most boats specifically targeting marlin are finding a few fish each day. If catching a marlin on the East Cape is on your bucket list, now is an excellent time to make it happen. If marlin is your primary goal, however, I still highly recommend joining me in Magdalena Bay. It’s one of the premier marlin fisheries anywhere, and the variety of fishing available there is incredible. Along with outstanding offshore action for marlin, dorado, and tuna, the mangroves offer some of the most exciting inshore fishing you’ll find anywhere. Snook, cubera snapper, leopard grouper, orange-mouthed corvina, golden trevally, and many other species make every day in the mangroves a true adventure. The combination of offshore and inshore opportunities is what makes Mag Bay such a special destination. As for the weather, it’s definitely feeling like summer. Temperatures are hot, but so far we’ve seen very little rain and no significant tropical systems. We’re now entering the heart of hurricane season, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on any developing storms and tropical moisture over the next couple of months. As always, if you’re thinking about fishing with us, we’d love to show you what Southern Baja has to offer. Whether your goal is roosterfish from the beach, offshore tuna and marlin, or an unforgettable adventure in Magdalena Bay, we’re ready when you are.
