The Reel Baja's Tip of the Week

With the weather getting hot some of the best fishing will be early in the morning and late afternoon. Concrete on those times especially if fishing from the beach. The fish can certainly be active other times of day but those “magic hours” can be some of the best.

5-Day Outlook as of 4/27/26

We expect good weather and good fishing this upcoming week. We will see a little wind in the afternoons from the Southeast it that is typical for this time of year. The fishing should remain steady as the water temperatures are looking good.

Techniques & Tips as of 4/27/26

Inshore - This time of year we see a lot of action early in the mornings as well as the low light hours in the evenings. People tend to over look these time periods. If you want some great action get up and on the water early or fish a little later in the day as those "magic" hours can be great. Offshore - have a few different rods ready from 8wt. to 12/14wt as you never know what you might encounter as far as species and size of fish. It never fails you will be running to a destination and you run into feeding fish on your way. You need to be ready for anything before you leave the dock.

Baja Fly Fishing Report – Roosterfish, Dorado & Tuna (April 2026) Spring is definitely in the air here in Baja, and the fly fishing has been solid this week. The weather has been about as nice as it gets—warm days, good light, and overall just a great time to be on the water. Inshore fly fishing in Baja has been producing some solid action with a few slower days mixed in. Roosterfish have been the highlight, with some really good shots at larger fish along with steady action from small to medium roosters most days. It hasn’t been wide open, but when things line up, it’s been really good. We’re also still seeing plenty of jacks around, along with a few areas holding red snapper. There’s a lot of bait in the area right now, which is a good sign, but it’s also brought in a ton of birds—and honestly, they’ve been more of a nuisance than anything. The pelicans have been all over us, diving on flies and getting into everything. When we’re chumming, they’re right behind the boat, and we’ve even had a few get hooked up, which is never fun. We’ve even had cormorants in the mix, so between all of them, it’s been a bit of a battle out there at times. We do have a little wind starting today that looks like it’ll stick around for the next few days. We thought we were done with the north winds, but they’re giving us one more push. It might make things a little uncomfortable at times, but as always, if we can get out, we will. A little further offshore, Baja fishing is starting to see more dorado showing up in our waters. Most of these fish have been in that 20–40 pound range, and while it’s not wide open by any means, the numbers are improving day by day. There are also still some tuna around, mainly with porpoise schools. We had a quick window of tuna action off Cerralvo on one of the banks, but it only lasted a couple days before it disappeared. We’ll keep an eye on that as things continue to shift. For those fishing conventional gear, the pompano bite has been really good as well. All in all, things are trending in the right direction as we move deeper into spring and it feels like things are starting to build. We do have some openings coming up for fly fishing trips in Baja and Magdalena Bay, so if you’ve been thinking about getting a trip on the calendar, now’s a great time to start lining up dates.
