Description: About Sacramento River

The Upper Sacramento has 40 miles of some of the most accessible fly fishing in California. Though it cascades more than 2000 feet through a forested canyon between Lake Siskiyou and Shasta Lake, it parallels I-5 and the Union Pacific railroad the whole way down. This river has few secret spots. The seasons bring not only a variety of hatches but also a lake run of Kamloops that double the size of the local resident rainbow. Winter and spring flows can be intimidating and limiting but some of the biggest bows are caught in the toughest conditions. Some say “high sticking” was invented on this river by the famous historical angler Ted Fay. It may not be the only technique that works well but is our local style. The historical town of Dunsmuir gets a boost in fish population from the local hatchery and fishing under Mossbrae falls makes for a fantastic photo.
