Description: About American River

The lower American river comprises the 25-mile stretch of water from Nimbus Dam, which is located on Hazel Avenue, near highway 50, all the way to Discovery Park, where the American River meets the Sacramento River. Howe Avenue, Watt Avenue, Sunrise Avenue and Hazel Avenue are easy access points from Highway 50. Another great way to access good fishing spots on the river is from the American River bike trail, which runs the entire length of the lower American. The American is a big river and is generally easy to wade depending on the flows. Be sure to check the flows before you go out, and when flows are above 2000, use caution when wading. There are several boat launch ramps, and the river can be fished with a drift or pontoon boat/personal floating craft. Special Note: River is closed from Nov 1st – Dec 31st from Ancil Hoffman Park to Nimbus Dam
